Manoel Luiz Osório was born on May 10, 1808, in the town that today bears his name: Osório, in Rio Grande do Sul. Having joined the Army at the age of fifteen, he fought in all the wars of his time: War of Independence (against Portuguese troops), Cisplatina War, Farroupilha Revolution, War against Oribe and Rosas and War against Aguirre. Finally, he fought in the main battles of the Triple Alliance War against Paraguay. He stood out at the Battle of Tuiuti, the “Battle of the Patrons” (see May 24).
He even attended the Military School, but his theoretical training was interrupted by the Cisplatina War. He obtained promotions to the highest rank, Marshal of the Imperial Army, always for bravery and service.
In addition to being a military man, he was an active politician, being one of the main leaders of the Liberal and Monarchist Party. For his services to Brazil, he received the title of Marquis of Herval. He was declared the Father of the Cavalry Branch in 1962.
